
What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are a way of continuing to learn whilst working and gaining Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) that are recognised and valued by employers. If you are practically minded and eager to work then Apprenticeships could be for you. They are designed for young people whose learning style is more suited to a job with training. If you want to do something that makes the most of your practical skills yet gives you the opportunity to gain professionally recognised qualifications at the same time. Apprenticeships could be the right option for you.
They are:
- An exciting way to get the skills and qualifications employers
- An alternative to sixth form or college
- If you are already in a job, they offer you the chance to get trained and qualifications whilst working
What can you expect?
- Your own training programme which clearly sets out how you will achieve your goals
- Regular meetings to discuss your progress and check that you are both happy and that you are getting the training as promised
- In most cases day release to attend further education
- All training, advice and help you need
- Provision of portfolio of evidence ring binder and supporting training materials
Types of Apprenticeship
- The Apprenticeship allows the apprentice to work towards an NVQ level 2. Apprentices successfully completing the Apprenticeship level may be in a position to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship. Typically lasts 1-2 years.
- The Advanced Apprenticeship is designed for apprentices who are able to accept responsibility for undertaking more demanding and complex tasks and have the ability to achieve an NVQ at level 3. Typically lasts 2-4 years.

- Engineering
Who can apply?
Apprenticeships are available to all young women and men who have the desire and ability to succeed. They are for 16 and 18 year olds who are:
- Leaving school
- Leaving college
- Already in a job
- Or looking for work
What do they offer you?

- high quality training
- recognised qualifications needed for your job
- additional training course or qualifications
What they lead to
An Apprenticeship can lead to an Advanced Apprenticeship or other appropriate qualifications. Advanced Apprenticeship can lead to higher level or professional qualifications. They can even open the way to university. Either option will help you to progress in your job. With Key Skills training, a Technical Certificate and an NVQ, you will gain all the skills needed to make you valuable to an employer.
